OpenAI doubles ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium usage limits effective immediately

OpenAI has raised usage limits for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium users, with the change taking effect immediately from early Oct. 30 Beijing time. The update was announced by Thibault Sottiaux, OpenAI’s head of core product and platform, and was framed as part of the company’s ongoing "28 days of shipping" effort. The move follows OpenAI’s recent decision to grant free API credits to ChatGPT Pro and Business users. The change also resolves a split that had emerged among Pro 200 subscribers. Users who subscribed after Sept. 29 had seen their usage cut in half, while existing users were given a grace period through Oct. 30. Under the new policy, higher-limit Pro 200 users keep their existing allowance, while lower-limit users now get double usage, bringing both groups to the same level. According to the report, Pro 200 usage has effectively returned to its earlier level. ChatGPT Work and Codex now include usage equal to 20 times that of Plus, while GPT-6 Pro in chat mode is capped at 200 messages per week with no five-hour usage limit. OpenAI did not extend Ultrafast access to Pro 200; that feature remains exclusive to Pro 500. Plus-tier limits are unchanged.

OpenAI Codex lead Tibo issues third full usage reset on Day 10 of 28-day challenge

OpenAI Codex lead Thibault Sottiaux, known as Tibo, used Day 10 of his self-imposed 28-day shipping challenge to issue another full usage reset instead of a product improvement. The reset was announced on Oct. 15 Taipei time and marked the third such day after similar resets on Day 6 and Day 8. The challenge, unveiled on Oct. 5 Taipei time, commits Tibo to either shipping one clear improvement relevant to most Codex and ChatGPT Work users each day or granting a full reset of usage limits. Under that framework, resets refill usage caps for ChatGPT Work and Codex on both the five-hour and weekly windows. From Day 3 through Day 10, five days brought feature updates and three days ended in full resets. The changes disclosed over that span included the rollout of GPT-6 to all ChatGPT users, a banked reset for paid accounts, live task adjustments with GPT-6.1 Sol Ultrafast, next-prompt suggestions in the Codex desktop app, a jump in GPT-6.1 Sol default context from 272,000 to 500,000 tokens, and a projected 60% cut in disk data used by the ChatGPT and Codex desktop apps.

OpenAI’s 28-day improvement pledge starts with a speed boost, but many users still want a reset

OpenAI product lead Thibault Sottiaux, known as Tibo, said the first delivery in his 28-day improvement pledge was a speed increase for GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. According to his post, default speed for subscribers rose from 30 tokens per second to 50 tokens per second, and the change also applied to partner tools connected through Sign in with ChatGPT. He said users did not need to change any settings and should notice the improvement within about two hours. The update came after complaints around GPT-6.1 Sol, which launched on Sept. 29 and slowed during its first two days because of heavy demand. Tibo had said the model was close to being the highest-demand model in OpenAI’s history, apologized for the “slow start,” and said all paid accounts would be reset if the team failed to ship meaningful improvements each day over the next 28 days. On Day 2, Tibo announced four more updates, including free Auto-review with no quota charge, a simplified API paid-usage tier system, a meeting notes plugin, and the public beta of Decisions API. Even so, a poll he posted drew 74,565 votes, with 76% selecting “needs a reset” and 24% choosing “good day.” The report said no reset had appeared as of 10 a.m. local time mentioned in the article.

OpenAI’s Codex lead says the next 28 days will bring daily improvements or a full usage reset

Thibault Sottiaux, who oversees OpenAI’s Codex and ChatGPT products, said on X on Oct. 4 that the team will spend the next 28 days shipping one improvement per day that is clearly noticeable and relevant to most Codex and ChatGPT Work users. If the team fails to deliver on any given day, OpenAI will issue a full usage reset instead. In this context, a reset means restoring paid users’ weekly usage limits in full before the normal cycle ends. The pledge came just two days after Sottiaux said OpenAI had already reset usage for all paid ChatGPT accounts following slowdowns tied to the early rollout of GPT-6.1 Sol, which launched on Sept. 29. He said that reset took effect at 10 a.m. Pacific Time on Oct. 2. The report also lists earlier resets tied to a roughly one-hour Codex outage on Sept. 26, unexpectedly fast quota consumption on Aug. 24, and heavy holiday usage of GPT-6 Astra with Blender on Sept. 7. It also notes a July 9 exchange with Anthropic’s ClaudeDevs account, after both companies reset usage limits on the same day. A third-party site cited in the report has tracked 48 Codex resets so far.

OpenAI sets a 28-day sprint for Codex, with daily visible improvements or a reset

OpenAI has put Codex and ChatGPT Work on a 28-day delivery schedule, according to Thibault Sottiaux, the company’s head of product and platform. He said the two products must either ship one update each day that brings a clear improvement for most users or go through a full reset of usage limits. A day earlier, Sottiaux said the team had already "locked in the target." He also said user feedback had become clear: people want the products to be simpler. From here, the team will focus on only four areas — simplifying the product, improving efficiency so users get more usable capacity, breakthrough features, and new models. The comments come as Codex faces stronger outside pressure. After Anthropic released Opus 5.5, community comparisons between Claude Code and Codex became more frequent, with most of the discussion centered on model capability, speed, and subscription limits.

OpenAI executive publicly shows how to run GPT-5.6 inside Claude Code

OpenAI and Anthropic are competing more directly over the developer workflow used for AI coding tools. In a public exchange on X, OpenAI product lead Thibault Sottiaux asked developers to share their setup for using GPT-5.6 Sol inside Claude Code, replying that OpenAI does not “pick harness.” The discussion followed a post from developer Theo, who said gpt-5.6-sol worked noticeably better in Claude Code than in Codex. Theo then outlined a setup using CLIProxyAPI, with authentication for both Claude and Codex connected to Claude Code and an alias named “claudex.” Sottiaux later said developers who did not want to install the Codex app could still point Claude Code to GPT-5.6 Sol in three steps, adding that he would cover one quota reset if the route got blocked. The article also says OpenAI’s user count is approaching 7 million after the broader GPT-5.6 rollout. CEO Sam Altman has separately called for GPT-5.6 Sol demos on X, while developers have posted examples ranging from UI redesigns to an F-16 simulator, a Minecraft-style recreation in Lean, and a game built from Codex Pets. Anthropic, for its part, announced a 7-day extension for Fable 5’s free quota.
